A renovation by architect Carol De Tine of Carriage House Studio included the addition of a porch and mudroom, filling in a sunken garden to bring the grade closer to the first-floor level, a new, level parking area, and new lattice fencing. The back of the property did not come close to the beauty of the meticulously restored and maintained front and side. Before renovation, it had a high, solid board fence, a sunken garden, and no direct entry to the kitchen at the back of the house. In a prominent corner location, all three sides of the property are highly visible, including the backyard. Caleb Johnson Architects and Builders designed the layout of the house to be kept informal, emphasizing an openness between the living room, kitchen, and decks. Coastal regulations played a heavy role in shaping and siting the building, but were used as advantages to add interest to the design. Krystal and Miller were paired together and placed in Three East B. Although there are various ways of producing a vector file, here is our list of the best and most popular. The vector file processes and stores graphics information, which the laser engraving machine uses to generate a G-code program. However, designing the part requires computer software capable of producing a scalable vector file (SVG). Programming the machine typically requires basic knowledge of g-code, the machine language used in CNC programming. The laser engraving/cutting software on our list serves many industries but is also helpful for the one-person shop or the home hobbyist.ĬNC machine tools, laser cutters included, require some initial designing and programming, but once completed, the machines run accurately and repeatedly with minimal interaction with an operator. Some software programs are specifically designed to work with laser cutters, while others are general-purpose software with laser cutting as one of their applications. In other words, picking the suitable laser engraving or cutting software is as critical as choosing a laser engraving machine or a laser cutting machine-maybe even more! Vector files define all those lines, curves, and points during laser engraving and cutting projects, so choosing the appropriate engraving or cutter software that meets your needs is essential. However, in reality, it’s much trickier than that and requires relatively sophisticated software to guide and control the beam. Even if the main components of different types of antifreeze are the same, their additive formulas are different. When the working temperature starts to rise and the sub-zero temperature is lifted, the circulating cooling water can be replaced with softened water such as distilled water or purified water. For the frequency of replacement, we recommend changing it once every 2-3 months (normal temperature). After the antifreeze deteriorates, it will be more corrosive and the viscosity will also change, so it needs to be replaced regularly. The antifreeze will deteriorate to a certain extent when it is used for a long time. Therefore, in the case of meeting the antifreeze performance, the lower the concentration, the better. Most antifreeze are corrosive, and ethylene glycol with a concentration of more than 30% may decrease the performance of laser source, as well as a potential failure risk to the water pump motor(stainless steel type) mechanical seal. The experience is often serene, almost meditative at times you’ll slowly poke through the forests and deserts and have time to take it all in. This is not the happy coincidence it would be in an open-world game Skyward Sword was meticulously designed this way by people who had enough time to agonize over the placement of every single bug. But what makes it feel more like a world than a set of levels is that you could be doing anything at once - you might notice bugs crawling near you while you’re fighting a reanimated corpse, and as soon as he’s dead again you drop what you were doing and set off to fill your pouch with more bugs. Skyward Sword is not an open-world adventure it is rather linear. It took Nintendo all of the ensuing five years to finish it, and somewhere along the line it decided that Skyward Sword would require the MotionPlus add-on for more precise controls. But what Wii needed was a game that was designed from the outset to use motion controls. Even as an afterthought, they worked well the game was a solid proof of concept that showed how motion could be integrated into a richer game experience than the Wii Sports mini-games. 2006’s Twilight Princess, which launched alongside Wii, was a GameCube game that had rudimentary motion controls grafted onto it in the final stages of development. This isn’t the first Zelda to make use of motion controls. But in creating the first game in the series designed around motion controls, the developers have taken the opportunity to ask themselves: What is truly necessary to make a game feel like Zelda, and what is just excess baggage left over from 25 years of clinging to tradition? World In Motion Skyward Sword is not the game to slaughter that particular sacred cow, as ridiculous as it sometimes seems when it’s dropped into an otherwise deeply serious moment in the story. There’s a certain comfort in knowing that every time Link opens a treasure chest, he’s going to hold the item above his head with a smile on his face while we all hum along to the familiar dah-dah-dah-DAH musical cue. The Zelda series is one of the most oddly ritualized in all of gaming there is a whole laundry list of things a Zelda game simply must have or else its fans would be utterly scandalized. What sets Skyward Sword apart is that its designers have truly rethought the Zelda framework, which has not changed much in the 25 years since the release of the first game. To be fair, these sorts of superlatives might describe any Zelda game. ( writer John Mix Meyer has put in 40 hours and he’s just about finished, but not quite.) As of this writing I’ve lost 30 hours to Skyward Sword and I still have more to do. The visual design and music are gorgeous, the gameplay varied and well paced, the script humorous. It has taken Nintendo five years to release a game in this series developed exclusively for Wii, and it delivers in every way possible including some you wouldn’t necessarily expect. The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is not one of those games. Have you ever played a game that took forever to come out, only to find yourself wondering, “What the hell were they doing for all this time, anyway?” 8/17/2023 0 Comments Embr braceletThe device is supposed to instantly provide a warming or cooling sensation on your wrist. Setting up Embr Wave 2 The device comes with a lovely silver Milanese loop-style band that makes it look chic. Even so it’s big, though not much more so than an Apple Watch, for example. It’s softer, rounder and prettier than before. The new version has been made a lot smaller, a lot more thoughtfully, and truthfully, a lot more feminine. The original Embr Wave was big and bulky and very square, looking like an old school wrist computer. The Wave 2 the same way as putting an ice cube or a heat pack on your wrist-cooling or warming one sensitive area has ripple effects though the body.Įmbr Wave 2 claims it senses your skin temperature and uses precisely-engineered algorithms to maximize the effectiveness of its “thermal sensations”. Why the wrist? There is a higher density of temperature-sensitive nerve endings on the inside of your wrist than on your fingertips. You wear the Wave 2 on your wrist, and press a button to deliver on demand warmth or cool as you need it, or you can choose from preset programs that will run for a set period of time.Įmbr says Wave 2 works “with your body and mind to naturally change your perceived temperature in a matter of minutes.” It precisely cools or warms the temperature-sensitive skin on your wrist, triggering a response by your body and mind to help you feel about 5☏ cooler or warmer overall. Since then the company has released a 2nd version of the product and it’s been updated significantly.Įmbr Wave is a ‘personal thermostat’ that claims it can make you feel warmer or cooler, depending on what you want.
8/17/2023 0 Comments Steinway sample managerNext, a worker makes initial adjustments to the strings’ tension, a process known as “chipping.” Then, using a gentle flame, the “grand finisher” burns thin layers of felt from the hammerheads to make sure they are properly aligned with the strings. Another employee fits the harp a craftsman uses a chisel to score the soundboard to accommodate the strings the harp and soundboard are lowered into the case the stringer hand-threads the strings through hundreds of pins. The harp, which weighs three hundred and forty pounds, must sustain the forty thousand pounds of tension necessary to keep the strings in tune. Later, the rim goes to a case maker, who assembles the wooden skeleton that will support the piano’s “harp,” the cast-iron plate through which the strings are run. The rim stays in position for twenty-four hours, and then it moves to a climate-controlled warehouse-the conditioning room-where it spends the next two months. Each Steinway requires several kinds of lumber, writes Miles Chapin, a great-great grandson of the founder Henry Steinway, in his book “88 Keys: The Making of a Steinway Piano”: birch for the hammers, sugar maple for the rim, and Sitka spruce for the soundboard, among other varieties.Īt Steinway’s Long Island City factory, the film shows a team of six bending the rim-a twenty-two-foot plank formed from eighteen thin layers of maple-around a mold to form that familiar piano shape: a deep U with a hump on one side, to house the highest octaves in the keyboard. In an early scene, a wood technologist from Steinway travels to a lumberyard in Sitka, Alaska, where he examines the stock with the care of a gourmet chef choosing ingredients. The 2007 film “Note by Note: The Making of Steinway L1037,” produced and directed by Ben Niles, documents the manufacture of a single Steinway grand piano over almost a year. To understand why the piano community cares so deeply about the way Steinways are manufactured, it helps to understand the process-a remarkable example of handcraftsmanship in an age of mass production. Fans complained about a decline in quality while some Steinway aficionados think manufacturing improved under subsequent owners-Steinway changed hands again in 19, eventually going public in 1996-others believe the instruments never fully recovered. CBS demanded more productivity from Steinway and made changes on the factory floor to that end, despite resistance from workers and management. Others worry that Paulson will tinker with the manufacturing process in an attempt to reduce costs.Ĭoncerned Steinway devotees point to the period following Steinway’s sale to CBS in 1972 as an example of how things could go wrong. Some are afraid that Paulson will relocate manufacturing operations so it can sell the valuable Long Island City property on which the Steinway factory is located, and that the quality of the instrument will suffer as new workers learn skills that Steinway’s craftspeople have honed over decades. “People are a little more concerned with this particular purchase because Paulson as a company has no connection to the music industry,” he said. Steve Cohen, a piano dealer and consultant to piano manufacturers, told me that some Steinway fans would have preferred a different buyer. It’s uncommon for a concert pianist to perform on anything other than a Steinway. Fans exchange notes on the tonal quality of particular models and years of manufacture the same way oenophiles compare vintages. Volumes have been published on the company’s history, detailing its manufacturing practices, and cataloguing every known Steinway variety. Steinway has an ardent following among musicians and collectors. 8/17/2023 0 Comments Blight definitionInstead purchase certified seed potatoes from a reputable supplier each year. For the same reason, DO NOT use tubers from a previous year’s potato crop as seed potatoes. All of these plants are potential sources of P. How do I avoid problems with late blight in the future? In the spring, dispose of any volunteer tomato and potato plants (as well as weeds such as nightshade) as described above. Once tomato fruits or potato tubers begin to show symptoms of late blight, they should NOT be eaten, nor should they be canned or otherwise preserved. However, before attempting to preserve any fruit or vegetable, contact your county UW-Extension office for the most current food preservation instructions. Healthy-looking fruits from late-blight-affected tomato plants are safe to eat or preserve. Diseased plants or plant parts (e.g., tomato fruits or potato tubers) should NOT be composted. Bagged plants then can be put out for trash pickup. The bags should be left in the sun for a few days to make sure that plants, as well as any P. For home gardeners, the preferred method of disposal is to pull affected plants (roots and all), and place them in plastic bags. How do I save a plant with late blight? Plants showing symptoms of late blight cannot be saved and should be disposed of immediately to limit spread of P. infestans infected potato tubers that have remained in the soil after harvest or have been stored in a warm place. infestans-infected tomato plants or fruits kept warm in compost piles, and P. However, the organism can survive on infected plant material that remains alive through the winter. infestans is unlikely to survive over the winter in Wisconsin soils. infestans can also be introduced on infected plants (e.g., tomato seedlings) or potato tubers that are brought into an area for sale. infestans can be introduced when sporangia (i.e., spore-like structures) of the organism are blown into an area on prevailing winds. Some variants cause more severe problems on tomatoes others are more of a problem on potatoes. There are several variants of this organism. Where does late blight come from? Late blight is caused by the fungus-like water mold Phytophthora infestans. Other tomato and potato diseases such as Septoria leaf spot (see University of Wisconsin Garden Facts XHT1073), early blight (see University of Wisconsin Garden Facts XHT1074) and Verticillium wilt may be misidentified as late blight. Affected leaf, stem, fruit or tuber tissue often eventually develops a white-gray, fuzzy look as the late blight organism begins to reproduce. Potato tubers with the disease develop a reddish-brown discoloration under the skin and these areas may become sunken. Tomato fruits with late blight develop large, often sunken, golden- to chocolate-brown, firm spots with distinct rings. If weather conditions are cool and wet, entire plants can collapse and die from late blight in seven to 10 days. Stems can also exhibit dark-brown to black areas. What does late blight look like? On leaves of tomato or potato, late blight begins as pale-green or olive-green areas that quickly enlarge to become brown-black, water-soaked, and oily-looking. More recently, the disease caused severe losses for fresh market tomato producers and home gardeners in Wisconsin. Historically, late blight was responsible for the Irish potato famine, which led to the death of at least one million Irish, and the emigration of another one million Irish to Great Britain, the United States, Australia, Canada and other countries. This disease also affects, although typically to a lesser extent, eggplants and peppers, as well as related weeds such as nightshade. What is late blight? Late blight is a destructive disease of tomatoes and potatoes that can kill mature plants, and make tomato fruits and potato tubers inedible. Late blight can decimate tomatoes and potatoes in seven to 10 days if weather conditions are cool and wet.Īmanda Gevens, Anna Seidl, Brian Hudelson, UW-Madison Plant Pathology |
